Welcome! You are here because you want to learn about music, and you want to learn to sing or play an instrument. Together we will identify and develop your innate gifts, and I look forward to working with you.
Music lessons are a 'full-contact' experience. Your body engages in breathing, fingering, and feeling the music. Your ears listen to the music as you create it, translating it into concepts your mind can analyze. Your heart takes the written notes on the page and transforms them into active, passionate musical sound. Come to lessons prepared to engage in the music, not merely to play the notes. Each lesson follows a similar structure:
Review of the practice materials
You & I will discuss each week what you are to work on during the week. Daily short session of practice are more productive than a few long sessions. Students with disciplined and organized regular practice sessions make the most progress. Lessons held without dedicated practice time between lessons will not be productive lessons, but rather review sessions.
Focused exercises are vital for improvement, and are to be rehearsed during lessons as well as incorporated into practice sessions. Your staff paper will be used to notate these exercises and the purpose of each.
Application to musical selections
So much music to choose from! We will choose pieces to study which may vary weekly at the beginning, and monthly as we work toward more complicated music. Your technical exercises are based on the music you are studying, to improve those tricky parts.
Study of excerpts
As your lessons progress, we will listen to excerpts of great composers for your instrument and discuss the elements of their compositions. In time, you will also create music during lessons, and develop it during practice time at home.
We will discuss performance expectations together, and these may change as you grow as a musician. I believe that music is meant to be heard and shared in order to be fully experienced the way the composer intended.
Questions encouraged during lessons, and if a question comes up during practice I can be reached during office hours by email, text, or phone.
Office Hours are 9am - 9pm Monday - Friday. If you do not reach me immediately because I am with a student, I will always respond within 24 hours of your note.
Engage mind and body in the experience of making music! Lessons include technical exercises, historical context, listening examples, and integrating breathing into your playing.
Inspire students to go beyond the lesson! Fun yet informative lessons motivate students to spend time on their instrument at home. Composition is just one more element of learning to play your instrument as you learn how to communicate your own creation, not only famous songs.
Sing: A master musician is one who lets his or her soul communicate using an instrument. Whether through the keyboard, flute, or using the voice, lessons provide you will the skill and confidence to sing out!
